Pileated Woodpecker

My favorite source for idenifying birds is the Cornell Lab of Orinthology. We frequently look up birds and listen to the call recordings, trying to identify the voices we hear outside.

Just yesterday morning we were taking a look at a few birds and somehow ended up on the Pileated Woodpecker page. A friend has a son who is fascinated by birds and has been watching for the Pileated Woodpecker to arrive in their stretch of the forest.

It had been lightly raining all morning when Chica asked to go out and explore a bit. It didn't take long before I heard "MOMMA! Come see." Much to my surprise and delight, there he was, crest and mustache brightly red, hopping up the tree closest to our deck.

Now I know I am becoming more of a bird watcher...I grabbed the binoculars instead of the camera so I could get a closer look. But if you click on the bird's name above, you can visit his page at All About Birds.
